đŸŒŋ About Our Aquaponics System

What is Aquaponics?

Aquaponics is a sustainable food production system that combines aquaculture (raising fish) with hydroponics (growing plants in water). In our system, fish waste provides nutrients for plants, while plants filter and clean the water for the fish.

đŸĢ WNCC STEM Club Project

This aquaponics system is maintained by the WNCC STEM Club and is located in the WNCC Biology Lab. Students learn about:

  • Sustainable agriculture and food production
  • Water chemistry and biological cycles
  • Fish husbandry and plant cultivation
  • Environmental science and ecology
  • Technology integration and monitoring systems

🔧 System Components

  • Fish Tank: Houses our fish that provide nutrients through waste
  • Grow Beds: Where plants grow and filter the water
  • Water Pump: Circulates water between components
  • Monitoring System: Tracks water quality and system health
  • Live Camera: Allows remote monitoring of fish and plants

📚 Educational Goals

Through this project, students gain hands-on experience with:

  • Biology and life sciences
  • Chemistry and water testing
  • Technology and data monitoring
  • Sustainable practices and environmental stewardship
  • Problem-solving and critical thinking
